# Platform Version

> The platform version is the runtime Ownkube ships to power your deployment or database, upgraded in-app from the detail page.

**The platform version is the runtime Ownkube ships to power a deployment, such as the version that runs a [managed Postgres](/docs/glossary/managed-postgres) database or the version that runs your app's deployment environment.** When Ownkube publishes a new platform version with improvements, your deployment's or database's detail page shows an Upgrade control so you can move onto it.

Platform version applies wherever Ownkube manages the software running underneath your workload rather than your own application code. Managed databases run on a DB platform version, where new versions bring engine features and reliability improvements, and backups and point-in-time recovery both depend on being on a current version. Deployments run on a platform version that provides the base runtime behavior around your container. Upgrades use drain-safe swaps, so a database or deployment stays reachable through the rollout rather than dropping connections outright.

Platform version is distinct from an [infrastructure update](/docs/glossary/infrastructure-update): platform version is about the software Ownkube ships to run your workload, while an infrastructure update is about the cloud resources underneath an own-cloud cluster. You'll see both concepts on own-cloud clusters; on Ownkube-managed compute, platform version upgrades are the ones that show up.
