Northflank is one of the most capable platforms in the category, and if you are a platform team standing up infrastructure, it is a serious tool.
A solo developer or a team of three usually goes looking for an alternative because Northflank keeps Kubernetes in view and is built for people whose job is running infrastructure. They just want to push an app and get a URL. This post is an honest comparison for that reader.
TL;DR
- Northflank is powerful and cheap on raw CPU, and it runs in your own account on several clouds today.
- Its own tagline is “making Kubernetes boring,” which tells you the truth: Kubernetes is still in front of you, and the product is aimed at platform teams.
- Ownkube is built for one developer or a small team: deploy in seconds, no cluster to reason about, a prepaid wallet so nothing surprises you.
- Northflank genuinely wins on raw per-vCPU rate, multi-cloud, and GPU today. We would rather say that than pretend.
- If you want power and a platform team to run it, pick Northflank. If you want to ship personal software on your own, pick Ownkube.

Why a solo developer looks past Northflank
Kubernetes is still in the room
Northflank’s pitch is that it makes Kubernetes boring, and it does a good job of that. The concepts are still present, though: you reason about a cluster, about how workloads schedule onto it, and about the machinery underneath.
For a platform team that is the point. For one person shipping a side project, it is surface area you did not want to own.
It is built for platform teams
Northflank’s features and its own-cloud setup assume an org that is standing up infrastructure for other engineers. The defaults, the docs and the roadmap all point at that buyer, and a solo developer sits off to the side.
Setup is more than “push and get a URL”
The power comes with configuration. When your actual requirement is “deploy this container in seconds and never think about the substrate,” the extra knobs are work you have to carry.
Northflank is good at what it does, and it is built for a different buyer. The question is which buyer you are.
Northflank vs Ownkube
Prices are approximate, from each provider’s pricing page, as of October 2026. Read the table as the shape of each model rather than a live quote.
| Ownkube | Northflank | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | One developer or a small team shipping personal software | Platform teams standing up infrastructure |
| Kubernetes exposure | Nothing to reason about; deploy in seconds | Present, made “boring” but visible |
| Pricing structure | Metered or a flat-price box, your choice per app | Metered per vCPU-hour (fixed plans optional) |
| Billing method | Prepaid wallet the plan loads and usage drains | Postpaid pay-as-you-go |
| Credit rollover | Unused wallet credit rolls over and never expires | Postpaid, nothing to roll over |
| Raw CPU rate | About $18/vCPU/mo metered (memory rate is where we win) | Cheapest of the group per vCPU |
| Own cloud | AWS today, GCP and Azure coming soon | Several clouds today |
| GPU | No | Yes |
| Entry point | Pay as you go from a $5 top-up; Personal $5/mo (loads $5 credit), Team $20/mo | Free tier, then pay-as-you-go |
Northflank hands a powerful, multi-cloud, Kubernetes-based platform to a team that will operate it. Ownkube hides the substrate so one person can ship without operating anything.
Where Northflank genuinely wins
Raw per-vCPU rate
Northflank’s metered CPU works out cheaper than ours per vCPU. If the single number you optimize for is dollars per vCPU-hour, Northflank wins that line.
Multi-cloud in your own account, today
Northflank runs in AWS, GCP and other clouds inside your own account now. Ownkube’s own-cloud path is AWS today, with GCP and Azure coming soon. If you need GCP or multi-cloud in your own account right now, Northflank is the honest answer.
GPU
Northflank can run GPU workloads, and Ownkube cannot today. Model training or GPU inference is a reason to choose Northflank.
Where Ownkube is the better trade for a solo developer
Deploy in seconds, no cluster to reason about
Ownkube Compute takes a git push or a container and gives you a running URL with automatic TLS. Pick what to deploy (a web app, a worker, a cron job, Postgres or a cache), point it at a repo or an image, and it runs.
The only thing in your mental model is the app. For someone whose job is shipping, that is the whole product.

A prepaid wallet instead of a postpaid meter
Northflank is postpaid pay-as-you-go, which is the model behind every “I left something running and got a surprise bill” story.
Ownkube loads a wallet each month (Personal loads $5, Team loads $20), usage draws it down per minute, and at zero balance apps pause with data kept. The most you can spend is the balance you loaded, and unused credit rolls over and never expires. Our guide to bounding a cloud bill covers the setup.
Metered or flat, per app
Northflank meters everything. Ownkube lets you choose per deployment: meter a bursty web app so idle hours cost almost nothing, or put a steady worker on a flat Spark box (from $5/mo) or Core box (from $58/mo). Managed Postgres (from $4/mo plus $0.25 per GB storage) and a Valkey cache (from $2/mo) are always a flat box.
Memory is where the money is
Our per-GiB memory rate is well under the metered competition. Personal software tends to be memory-heavy and CPU-idle, so the app sits on the memory line most of the day.
That is why a typical small always-on app can total less than the raw-CPU comparison suggests, even when the per-vCPU number favors Northflank.
The same app can move into your own AWS later
When an app has to run inside your own or a customer’s AWS account, the same app ships there with no rewrite, with its logs, metrics and health checks. See our Railway, Render, and Northflank comparison for how the three platforms differ.
The trade-offs on the Ownkube side: two regions today (Mumbai and Germany), no GPU, and custom domains are not on Compute yet, so apps use their *.ownkube.app hostname.
FAQ
Is Northflank good for solo developers?
It can work, but it is built for platform teams, and Kubernetes stays in view. If your requirement is “deploy this in seconds and never think about a cluster,” a developer platform like Ownkube fits that better. If you want the power and have someone to operate it, Northflank is strong.
Is Ownkube cheaper than Northflank?
On raw per-vCPU rate, Northflank’s metered CPU is cheaper, and it is the closest competitor we have on price. The answer changes when you price the whole app instead of the web process.
A real app needs a managed Postgres and usually a cache, and Northflank bills both as separate services on top of compute. Ownkube runs them on near-cost boxes (a database box from $4 a month plus $0.25 per GB of storage, a Valkey cache box from $2).
Take a small always-on stack: a 1 vCPU / 1 GiB web app, a 1 GiB / 10 GB Postgres, and a small cache. That lands around $37 a month on Northflank against roughly $27 on Ownkube. The figures are approximate, mapped to each provider’s nearest real tier as of October 2026.
A CPU-hot app narrows the compute line, but the full-stack total stays lower on Ownkube because the database and cache run on boxes priced near cost. Run your own sizes on the homepage calculator.
Does Ownkube use Kubernetes?
Ownkube runs on managed compute, and the point of the product is that you never reason about a cluster: you deploy an app and get a URL. Northflank makes Kubernetes “boring” but leaves it visible; Ownkube keeps the substrate out of your way.
Can Ownkube run in my own cloud like Northflank?
Yes, on AWS today, with GCP and Azure coming soon. The same app you ship on Ownkube Compute moves into an AWS account you own with no rewrite. Northflank’s own-cloud option is multi-cloud today and aimed at platform teams; Ownkube’s is aimed at one developer.
Does Ownkube support GPU?
Not today. If you need GPU training or inference, Northflank is the better choice for that workload.
Where Ownkube fits
Pick Northflank if you are a platform team that wants power, multi-cloud in your own account, or GPU, and has someone to operate it.
Pick Ownkube if you are one developer or a small team who wants to deploy in seconds with no cluster to reason about. You get a wallet that bounds the bill and keeps the credit you do not spend, and the option to take the same app into your own AWS later with no rewrite. Deploy my first app.
