The best DigitalOcean App Platform alternatives in 2026 are Ownkube, Render, Railway, Fly.io, Heroku and, for static sites, Netlify. App Platform is an honest product with flat prices. People usually leave it over the database and cache lines, which start at about $15 each, or because autoscaling is only on dedicated instances.

This post prices one app with Postgres and a cache on each platform, from list prices on each provider’s pricing page, and covers when staying on DigitalOcean is the better call.

TL;DR

  • App Platform containers start at $5 a month for a fixed 1 vCPU and 512 MiB, and a 1 vCPU / 1 GiB container is $12. Managed Postgres starts at $15.15 and managed Valkey at $15.00.
  • A 1 vCPU / 1 GiB web app with a 1 GiB Postgres and a small cache comes to about $42 a month on App Platform. The same stack is about $27 on Ownkube, about $44 on Railway and about $57 on Render.
  • On App Platform, autoscaling needs a dedicated instance. Ownkube meters shared compute per minute, so a quiet app costs less and a busy one scales without moving tiers.
  • Stay on DigitalOcean if your Droplets, Spaces and databases already live there and the bill is predictable.
  • Price your own sizes with the cloud cost calculator.

How does DigitalOcean App Platform pricing work?

App Platform bills per component: each web service, worker or job runs on a container tier, and databases are separate managed products. List prices as of 2026-10-27:

Shared container Transfer included Price a month
1 vCPU fixed, 512 MiB 50 GiB $5
1 vCPU fixed, 1 GiB 100 GiB $10
1 vCPU, 1 GiB 150 GiB $12
1 vCPU, 2 GiB 200 GiB $25
2 vCPU, 4 GiB 250 GiB $50

Transfer past the included amount is $0.02 per GiB. Three static sites are free, each with 1 GiB of transfer, and each extra static site is $3 a month. Dedicated instances, which add autoscaling, cost more and are priced separately.

The add-ons are where a small app’s bill grows:

Add-on Price a month
Dev database (512 MiB Postgres) $7
Managed Postgres (1 vCPU, 1 GiB, 10 GiB storage) from $15.15
Managed Valkey from $15.00
Dedicated egress IP $25

Extra Postgres storage is $0.215 per GiB a month. The dev database is meant for development and staging, so a production app usually starts at the $15.15 managed node.

What does the same app cost on each platform?

We priced a 1 vCPU / 1 GiB web app averaging 40% CPU, a 1 GiB Postgres with 10 GB of storage and the smallest cache each platform offers. The figures come from our cheapest way to host a web app with Postgres comparison, which maps each provider’s nearest public tier.

Platform Web app Postgres Cache Monthly total
Ownkube $11.70 $10.50 $5.00 $27.20
DigitalOcean $12.00 $15.15 $15.00 $42.15
Railway $18.00 $17.50 $8.00 $43.50
Fly.io $5.92 $40.80 $10.00 $56.72
Render $25.00 $22.00 $10.00 $57.00
Heroku $50.00 $9.00 $30.00 $89.00

DigitalOcean’s web app line is competitive. The cache is where it falls behind: $15 for managed Valkey against $5 on Ownkube and $8 to $10 on Railway, Fly.io and Render.

Why people look for a DigitalOcean alternative

The database and cache cost more than the app

On a small app, Postgres and Valkey together are $30 a month, two and a half times the $12 web app.

Autoscaling needs a dedicated instance

Shared containers run at a fixed size. To scale with traffic you move to a dedicated instance, which is a larger step up in price than most side projects want.

You pay for the tier, busy or quiet

A container bills the same at 2% CPU and at 90%. Apps that sit quiet most of the day pay for capacity they rarely use.

The alternatives, one by one

Ownkube

Ownkube is a cloud for personal software. It runs web apps, background workers, cron jobs, managed Postgres and a Valkey cache next to each other on Ownkube Compute, with no cloud account to set up.

Apps meter CPU and memory per minute, at about $18 per vCPU and $4.50 per GiB a month, so a quiet app costs less than its peak size. If you would rather have a fixed price, switch an app to a flat Spark box: Spark 1 is $5 a month for 0.25 vCPU and 0.5 GiB, and Spark 3 is $19 for 1 vCPU and 2 GiB. Postgres runs on flat database boxes from $4 a month (DB 1, with 1 GiB, is $8), with storage at $0.25 per GB and 7-day backups on Personal and Team. Caches start at $2 a month.

Billing is a prepaid wallet with no seats. Pay as you go starts with a $5 top-up, Personal ($5 a month) and Team ($20 a month) load credit each month, and unused credit never expires. When the balance runs out, apps pause with their data kept until you top up.

Apps run in the Germany and Mumbai regions. Outbound traffic is $0.02 per GB in Germany, the same as DigitalOcean’s overage rate, and $0.13 per GB in Mumbai. If you need a region elsewhere, DigitalOcean has more of them.

Render

Render runs web services, workers, cron jobs and Postgres at flat instance prices, from $7 a month for 0.5 CPU and 512 MB. Postgres starts at $6 for a small instance. See Render pricing explained.

Railway

Railway meters CPU and memory per second, with no instance sizes to pick. Hobby is $5 a month and includes $5 of usage. See Railway pricing explained.

Fly.io

Fly.io runs Machines in many regions, from $2.19 a month for a shared-cpu-1x with 256 MB. Its Managed Postgres starts at $38 a month plus $0.28 per GB, which is why it ranks low on a stack with a database. See Fly.io pricing explained.

AWS Lightsail

If you run Droplets rather than App Platform, Lightsail is the closest match on AWS: fixed monthly server bundles from $5 with a transfer allowance included, and managed MySQL or PostgreSQL from $15. You run the server yourself. See AWS Lightsail pricing explained.

Heroku

Heroku has a large add-on marketplace and a familiar git push workflow. Its Eco dyno is $5 a month and sleeps after 30 minutes of inactivity, and the full stack above is the most expensive in the table. See Heroku alternatives.

Netlify

For static sites, Netlify adds per-branch previews and built-in forms, on a credit-based plan with a free tier. It is a frontend platform, so the backend still needs a home. See Netlify alternatives.

When to stay on DigitalOcean

Stay if your Droplets, Spaces, load balancers and databases already run on DigitalOcean, since keeping them on one account and one private network is worth a few dollars a month. Stay if you need a region Ownkube does not offer yet. And stay if the bill is predictable and the database line does not bother you.

A quick checklist before you move

  • List each App Platform component (web services, workers, jobs, static sites) and its tier.
  • Take a pg_dump of the managed database and test the restore on the new platform.
  • Copy environment variables and secrets, and check which ones point at DigitalOcean resources such as Spaces.
  • Run both copies side by side for a day and compare logs before switching traffic.

FAQ

Is DigitalOcean App Platform free?

For static sites, yes: three static sites are free with 1 GiB of transfer each. Containers for web services and workers start at $5 a month.

What is cheaper than DigitalOcean App Platform?

For an app with Postgres and a cache, Ownkube came out about $15 a month cheaper in our comparison, mostly on the database and cache lines. For the web container alone, DigitalOcean’s $5 and $12 tiers are already among the cheapest.

Does DigitalOcean App Platform autoscale?

Yes, on dedicated instances. Shared containers run at a fixed size.

What is the best DigitalOcean alternative for a small app?

For a small app with a database, Ownkube or Render. Ownkube has the lower bill and a prepaid wallet, and Render has flat prices that suit an app busy all day.

Where Ownkube fits

If App Platform’s web tier is fine and the database and cache lines are what hurt, Ownkube runs the same stack for less, with Postgres from $4 and a cache from $2, from a wallet you load once and keep. The Heroku alternatives guide and Railway alternatives guide cover the other common moves. Deploy my first app.
